The two LP CURTAIN CALLS set of STRIKE UP THE BAND / GIRL CRAZY (100 / 9, 10) may not be studio authorized (just a hunch). Plain-looking labels and hand drawn cover art, plus audio dubs of mostly midrange frequencies are clues. The CURTAIN CALLS album of BABES IN ARMS and BABES ON BROADWAY has a similar below standard look about it. (Inside this one's gatefold cover are four sepiatone movie stills.)SIDE ONE NOTES1.) Sound fades in on the orchestral overture. There's some distortion present. The track ends with Rooney slamming out some jazzy drum riffs. 2.) He plays piano and runs through "Our Love Affair." When Garland does her version, she's backed by Paul Whiteman's orchestra. Next is Mickey demonstrating where various band instruments would appear in the song. 3.) Judy sings the first verse and chorus, then she's joined by Mickey. Finally, Six Hits and a Miss are added. Exciting Latin rhythms follow-- a great track! 4.) Garland's torch song spotlight ("I ain't got nobody, and nobody's got me"). Lyrics include a plug for BARBASOL. 5.) This film highlight opens with Rooney's enthusiastic description of a big number that includes a melodrama spoof with a caped villain, the fair maiden and hero.SIDE TWO NOTES1.) Our Nellie, Martin and Squire Meriwether saga is interrupted by a chorus of "Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-Der-Ay." Naturally, the sequence ends with Nellie on the RR tracks and Martin racing to the rescue. 2.) Muted trumpet leads this Whiteman orchestral number. 3.) Mickey and gang pick up the Whiteman instruments while the band's on a break; they play a fabulous swing number. Judy plus Six Hits and a Miss sing. Features a fine xylophone solo. 4.) Mickey and contingent appear in a Paul Whiteman band contest and win first prize (a performance not heard here). 5.) Rooney conducts a massing of all contestant bands in a curtain dropper that reprises tunes previously heard.SIDE THREE NOTES1.) Main title features Tommy Dorsey's orchestra plus film dialogue. 2.) June Allyson's lusty vocal style is evident on this swing number with singing chorus girls. After Mickey's turn, an orchestral break spotlights a hot trumpet solo. 3.) Done as a cowboy-flavored novelty, a lot of unusual instruments here: mouth organ, tin can percussion, an ocarina chorus, etc. Clearly a big dance number. 4.) Exceptionally clever lyrics on this playful song. City slicker Rooney is rejected by cowgirl Garland. 5.) Rags Ragland sings birthday greetings to Judy. After she receives a gift piano, Judy sings another classic Gershwin tune, "Embraceable You.SIDE FOUR NOTES1.) Dorsey intros "our own arrangement of 'Fascinating Rhythm'." His swing band is augmented by a terrific string section. Starting with Tommy, individual musicians take solos. 2.) A gorgeously torchy rendition from Garland is done for Rags, who's feeling blue. 3.) There's a lot happening here (a tapping chorus) that begs to be seen. Dorsey's band is fabulous on this finale. (NOTE: This huge number was original director Busby Berkeley's sole contribution to the picture. He was fired for constantly clashing with Miss Garland.)STRIKE UP THE BAND (1940)SIDE ONE[2:58] Main Title - MGM studio orch.[8:17] Our Love Affair - Judy Garland & Mickey Rooney[5:52] Do the Conga - Judy, Mickey, Six Hits and a Miss[3:45] Nobody - Judy[6:47] The Gay Nineties Revue (Part I) - Mickey, Judy, June Preissler, Margaret Early, William Tracy, Larry Nunn & chorusSIDE TWO[7:47] The Gay Nineties Revue (Part II)[1:23] When Day is Done - Paul Whiteman & orch.[5:03] Drummer Boy - Judy, Mickey (instruments), Six Hits and a Miss[4:12] Band Contest Montage - MGM studio orch.[8:49] Finale - Judy, Mickey, Six Hits and a Miss & chorusGIRL CRAZY (1943)SIDE ONE[3:05] Main Title - "Sam and Delilah" - MGM studio orch. / Tommy Dorsey[4:36] Treat Me Rough - June Allyson, Mickey Rooney, Tommy Dorsey & orch.[4:55] Bidin' My Time - Judy Garland and the King's Men[4:41] Could You Use Me - Judy & Mickey[6:01] Happy Birthday to You - Rags Ragland & chorus / Embraceable You - Judy & chorusSIDE TWO[5:39] Fascinating Rhythm - Tommy Dorsey & orch.[3:31] But Not For Me - Judy[8:27] I Got Rhythm - Judy, Mickey, Tommy Dorsey & orch. w/chorusTOTAL TIME: 95:48
